Why You Don't Feel Like Yourself Anymore (And What To Do About It)

There's a moment that a lot of mums have, usually somewhere between the school run and the washing up, where you stop and think: when did I stop being me?
Not dramatically. Not in a way that makes you want to cry on the kitchen floor (well, maybe sometimes). But quietly. A slow, creeping realisation that somewhere between nappies and nursery runs and just-trying-to-keep-everyone-alive, you lost the thread of who you actually are.
You're not unhappy, exactly. You love your kids. You're grateful for your life. But something is missing. That something is you.
Why This Happens (And Why It's Not Your Fault)
When you become a mum, everything shifts. Your time, your body, your priorities, your identity. It happens gradually, and then all at once.
You spend months, sometimes years, in survival mode. Getting through the day. Doing what needs to be done. And in doing so, you quietly put yourself at the bottom of the list. Not because you're weak. Not because you made a bad decision. But because that's what the role demands, and you rose to it.
The problem is, when you spend long enough living for everyone else, you start to forget what it felt like to live for yourself. Your interests start to feel like luxuries. Your friendships slip to the bottom of the priority pile. The things that used to make you feel alive, creative, confident, you, start to feel distant. Like memories of a different person.
Psychologists actually have a name for the identity shift that comes with becoming a mother: matrescence. It's the profound transformation, physical, emotional, psychological, that happens when a woman becomes a mum. And just like adolescence, it can leave you feeling like you don't quite know who you are anymore. The difference is, nobody really talks about it.
The Signs You've Drifted From Yourself
You might not even realise how far you've drifted until you start to notice the signs:
You can't answer "what do you enjoy?" without thinking about what your kids enjoy
You feel vaguely guilty whenever you do something just for you
You've stopped investing in friendships because it feels selfish or complicated
You go through the motions of each day but feel quietly uninspired
You have a sense that there's more for you, you just can't quite see it yet
If any of that sounds familiar, you're not broken. You're not failing. You're just a woman who has given a lot of herself, and who is now, maybe for the first time, ready to choose herself again.
This Is Not About Becoming a Different Person
Here's what choosing yourself again is not: it's not abandoning your family. It's not being selfish. It's not going back to who you were before kids. You're not trying to go backwards. You're becoming more.
Motherhood has given you things, depth, perspective, empathy, resilience. But it shouldn't have taken away your sense of self in the process. You are still a woman with dreams, interests, goals and a need for real connection. Those things don't expire when you become a mum.
Choosing yourself again means giving yourself permission to exist beyond the role. To have friendships that are genuinely yours. To pursue things that light you up. To invest in experiences that make you feel alive, confident and excited about your life.
Where To Start
Rediscovering yourself doesn't happen overnight, and it doesn't require a dramatic life overhaul. It starts with small, intentional acts of choosing you.
1. Get honest about what's missing.
Not what you should want. What you actually miss. The creative outlet. The social life. The feeling of being known by people who see you as more than just someone's mum.
2. Invest in experiences that take you out of routine.
The version of you that feels alive doesn't emerge on the sofa. She shows up when you're in a new room, with new people, doing something that makes you feel good. Seek those moments out, even when it feels indulgent.
3. Prioritise connection, real connection.
Not surface-level small talk. Not the WhatsApp group for the school parents. Find women who are in the same season of life, who get it, who are also choosing themselves again. That community changes everything.
4. Stop waiting until everything settles.
It won't. Life doesn't slow down and hand you a gap. You have to carve out the space. The permission you're waiting for? It's not coming from anywhere external. It has to come from you.
You're Not Lost. You're Just Ready.
If you've been feeling like you've lost yourself in motherhood, here's what we want you to know: that feeling isn't a sign that something is wrong with you. It's a sign that you're ready.
Ready to step into a new chapter. Ready to invest in yourself again. Ready to build a life that includes you in it, not just everyone else.
Motherhood is part of who you are. But it is not all of who you are. And it's your time to remember that.
